Hydraulics

Hydraulics is the technology of using a fluid such as oil or water to produce forces that can be used to move loads. Hydraulic cylinders are capable of producing very large forces and smooth controllable movement, so it is not surprising that they are used extensively in industry—in presses and machine tools, and to supply the muscle on automated production lines—and many other applications. This module is designed to teach the basic principles of this technology, so that students can design a range of simple hydraulic systems. Early activities explain component recognition, safety and planning, and designing and working with hydraulic circuits. Later activities incorporate additional real-world problems that students can solve by building more advanced hydraulic circuits, such as reciprocating circuits and sequencing circuits. This curriculum will accommodate 7-, 10-, or 15-day class rotations.
