Robotics
Students write and test a program that Activity Listing enables the Boe-Bot to follow a light beam.
This module offers students hands-on experience with robotics and the world of robotic engineering. Using the Parallax Boe-Bot educational mobile robot kit, students gain skill writing programs to activate a robotic device and control its movement. After building a self-contained moving robot, students learn about robot movement and program their robot to move forward and backward, and make turns. The students also complete activities to help them learn about navigating with whiskers, light-sensing, and more. Multimedia activities on CD-ROM help students understand the history and uses of robots in industrial and other settings. This curriculum will accommodate 7-, 10-, or 15-day class rotations.
Student Objectives
  • Explain what a robot is
  • Define axes of movement and explain how they enable a robot to move
  • Define other robotic terms, such as controller, calculator, and payload
  • Explain how sensors enable a robot to detect motion, temperature, pressure, and how close an object is to the robot
  • Understand how a program enables a robot to operate
  • Write a debug program using PBASIC and download it to the Basic Stamp
  • Write programs to move the Boe-Bot in a variety of ways
  • Add a subroutine to a PBASIC program
  • Write and test a program to enable the Boe-Bot to navigate its environment using whiskers
  • Briefly describe how a photoresistor works with the Boe-Bot
  • Write a program to enable their Boe-Bot to act as a light compass
