In this module, students learn about the entire process of solving a crime, from the initial investigation of a crime scene to the prosecution of a suspect. As students don the hat of evidence technician, fingerprinting expert, police artist, laboratory forensic scientist, and expert witness, they explore the entire field of forensic science from a hands-on perspective. Students create composite pictures, perform DNA fingerprinting, collect and process evidence from a simulated crime scene, and analyze crime scene evidence to solve a crime. Students learn about the law enforcement and justice systems, and how new technological advances affect those systems and everyone in society. This curriculum will accommodate 7-, 10-, or 15-day class rotations.
Note: This module is recommended for students in grades 8-12. Electrophoresis experiment requires additional teacher preparation and supervision.
